HVAC equipment needs routine maintenance to run properly. This is true for ductless mini splits just as much as it is for heat pumps, air conditioners and furnaces. Ductless maintenance is easy to do and will keep the system running efficiently year round.

How Do Ductless Systems Work?

Ductless systems have two components, an outside compressor and an indoor air handler. Refrigerant that circulates between the two components heats and cools the air. The air handler hangs on the wall or from the ceiling in the space being heated and cooled. A remote gives the user complete control over the system.

Maintenance Tips

Cleaning is the first step to basic maintenance of a ductless system.

  • Clean or change the filter at least once a month. The air handler needs a steady flow of air to function properly. The filter also keeps the inside of the air handler clean while improving indoor air quality.
  • Use a hose to clean the outdoor compressor unit. A gentle spray of water will keep dirt and debris off the fins. Don’t use a pressure washer, as it can damage and deform the fins, which are critical for efficient heat exchange.
  • Inspect and clean the coils inside the air handler. A gentle swipe of a dust cloth can remove buildup.

Troubleshooting a Ductless System

Besides cleaning, there are a few other things you should do to keep your ductless system working efficiently.

  • Make sure the condensation is running off properly.
  • Keep vegetation and debris away from the outside compressor to keep the air flowing freely.
  • Change the batteries in the remote as needed.
  • Have a professional do a preventative maintenance every year.

Ductless maintenance isn’t difficult. Taking a bit of time each month to keep the system in good condition will pay off in years of smooth, efficient performance.
